Governor and Mrs. Carcieri present Allyson Even of Warren, a student at St. Mary's Academy - Bay View, with the First Lady's Award for her project from the 2005 Rhode Island Science and Engineering Fair. The First Lady's Award is presented to the recipient whose project is judged to have the best potential to benefit the State of Rhode Island. Allyson's project showed that the growth of cetain wetland plants could prevent algae growth.

Governor and Mrs. Carcieri met with students at West Warwick High School on February 15 as part of the Governor's Blue-Ribbon Panel on Math & Science Education. Students from Woonsocket High School, North Kingstown High School, and Mt. Hope High School participated via videoconference. The Panel wanted the input of students as it moves forward with identifying program and performance gaps in mathematics and science education and developing solutions so that RI's students can excel in these critical subjects.

Governor Carcieri encourages high school juniors to participate in the free SAT preparation classes provided by the RI Student Loan Authority, which, based on last year's success, will be offered in six school systems this year. The announcement was made at North Providence High School, which was one of the original program participants. (January 27, 2005)

Governor Carcieri salutes a new member of the Rhode Island State Police at the graduation ceremony for 34 individuals who spent the past six months in training. There were 3,500 applications for these slots on the force.(Friday, January 21, 2005)

Governor and Mrs. Carcieri congratulate Gail Armstrong on her painting "Castle Hill", which was awarded the best in show prize in the "Scenes of Rhode Island" show. The entries in the curated show are on display in the Atrium Gallery at One Capitol Hill through January.
