Governor Carcieri on Thursday, July 6, signed a package of health care reform bills into law at Atlantic Paper & Twine Company in Pawtucket. The Governor went back to the small business nine months after he first announced his health care reform agenda. The Governor was joined by legislators who sponsored many of the health care bills.

Governor Carcieri today signed into law the "Jessica Lunsford Child Predator Act of 2006". This increases the sentence for those convicted of first-degree child molestation to 25 years in prison and mandates lifetime monitoring by either electronic or a global positioning system upon release from prison.

Governor Carcieri welcomed Dr. Leon Lederman, a Nobel Laureate in Physics (seated to the Governor's left) to Cranston West High School to promote Physics First. This pilot program, championed in Rhode Island by Governor Carcieri, reorders the traditional high school science curriculum so freshmen take physics first. Dr. Lederman has been the leader in the Physics First movement. Five RI high schools begin the program this fall.
