
Governor Carcieri also Presented with Gold “Well Workplace” Award from WELCOA for State Government Wellness Program
Governor Donald L. Carcieri today honored sixteen organizations from settings representing worksites, education, community, healthcare, government, and the restaurant industry at an awards ceremony in the State Room to recognize creative and effective wellness programs and policies.
The Governor’s Awards for Wellness Innovation were given to eight organizations from six award categories, including:
Governor Donald L. Carcieri today joined US Senator Jack Reed, Rear Admiral Jonathan W. Bailey, Director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Corps and NOAA Office of Marine and Aviation Operations, Dr. Robert Ballard of the Institute for Exploration, and local elected officials and business owners to celebrate the imminent construction of an 8,400 square foot research facility and offices for the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer. The home port of the 250-foot research vessel, with its crew of 24 and 19 scientists, will be at Quonset’s Pier One.
Okeanos Explorer, “America’s Ship for Ocean Exploration,” is a former Navy surveillance ship that was recently converted into a world-class tool for advanced scientific discovery.
Rhode Island Mayoral Academies (RIMA) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony today to mark the opening of Democracy Prep Blackstone Valley (DPBV). Governor Donald L. Carcieri, House Majority Leader Gordon D. Fox, Senate Majority Leader Daniel P. Connors, RIMA board chair Mayor Daniel J. McKee and Rhode Island Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Deborah A. Gist, and others welcomed DPBV to Rhode Island’s education community.
The president and CEO of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, Nelson Smith, addressed the audience of state and local officials, school leaders, parents, teachers, scholars and supporters. Smith is a nationally recognized expert on charter schools and education policy.

Report Shows 1,703 Jobs Created or Retained
The Governor’s Office of Economic Recovery & Reinvestment today posted the preliminary data as reported to the Recovery Accounting and Transparency Board, the federal agency responsible for the oversight of the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). The preliminary data is available to view or download at www.recovery.ri.gov/arra/progrpts.
Rhode Island state agencies submitted ARRA Section 1512 reports for 127 programs in accordance with the requirements of the Act. The files represent preliminary data and are subject to review and modification. The Office of Economic Recovery & Reinvestment is currently completing the data quality review process of these reports. State agencies will make necessary data corrections during the federally prescribed state review period from October 11th until October 29th. Applicable files will be updated upon completion of the state review period. Final reports will be posted following completion of the federal review.
